What is the R.A.T. Race all about?

This Virginia Off-Road Series race is a fun, but challenging, adventure triathlon, perfect for any level of competitor (must have some experience in all disciplines, however!).  Athletes will register as SOLO Kayak Racers or as 2 person teams which  will compete in 3 categories: Male, Female, and Coed.  The paddling  will take place on the Rappahannock River. There are some decent rapids on the 4 mile river section, so be ready to get wet. The mountain bike and run are challenging with good climbs, great single track, and fire roads. Free post race barbeque from our local Virginia Barbeque and beer from local Blue & Gray Brewery are guaranteed to all competitors. This is set up to possibly become the best time you will have at a race of this kind in 2008, so come out and join us for this adventure.

Soloists:  Kayaks only in this category -no canoes!  You must provide your own kayak and safety equipment or rent from the Virginia Outdoor Center (V.O.C.) (not included in race fee).  Solo racers must have all of their personal gear approved at the race start prior to 8:30 in order to race.  An email with race information will be sent prior to race day.  Racers must be familiar with race format and other important info before arriving at the race site.

Teams:   Canoes and safety gear will be provided by the (V.O.C.).   You can bring your own canoe and gear; however, both MUST be inspected by V.O.C. staff prior to the race.  It is the team captain's responsibility to find the inspector at the canoe start.  Racers who use their own equipment are responsible for bringing it to the canoe start prior to the 8:30 race briefing.  Team captains will receive an email with an informational attachment. They are responsible for sharing this info with the other team members. All members must be familiar with the race format and other important info before they arrive at the race site.

Shuttles will be provided from the registration area to the race start (see below).  Please be aware that you must wear helmets during the canoe and bike leg of the race. You must ride a functional mountain bike. Hybrids and Cruisers will not be safe or fun to ride on this course. If you need a bike, see Bob at The Bike Stop in Culpeper, VA. Trust us - it's worth the trip!

The V.O.C. will is offering discounted whitewater canoeing classes on the Saturday before race day (perfect for first timers) and discounted AWESOME camping the night before the race - right at the race site.  Contact the  V.O.C. for more information and to make reservations.
